The Value of Quality and Cost: The Jewelry Maker's Tool Kit

When looking at the basic kit of every jewelry maker and crafting master you see a wonderful variety of pliers and cutters, from the simple flat pliers to the more complex tier pliers.  As each artist and designer ages and advances their techniques they start to intricate newer, more advanced tools to change their designs into more intricate pieces.

Throughout history humanity has worked to create beautiful, unique jewelry creations and in order to do that they have invented new tools to improve their chances.  Pliers are among the most useful and well used tools in a designers tool kit, and the quality of the pliers you choose can also determine the quality of the designs produced.

Pliers have consisted of a basic design since their conception, and it consists of the pivot, the handles, and the head.  Each of the these pieces plays an important role in how well constructed the tool is and how well the quality of the finished product will appear.  When looking for a well put together pair of pliers you want to look at not only what the head is constructed from but also the material of the grips and whether they are heavy duty or not.

When I look for a pliers set that is well suited for jewelry making I want to keep in mind that I will be producing designs with materials that can mark and scuff easily so the tools I use are important to the quality of my products.  The other tools that I use can involve the use of electricity so the need for insulated grips is important when looking at pliers.  However, among the most important thing to look at is the possibility of plated pliers as well.  Basically, they have a softer metal plated on their heads that allows for less pressure on metals that mark easily.

For most people however, they find themselves looking at the price tags of all tools and materials that they want to purchase.  The economy has been impacted around the world, and money seems to create a bigger impact on everything.  So when you look at what you would like to add to your jewelry making kit, you want to not only consider the price tag but what your product will look like at the end.  The materials that can be used to create something unique are only as good as the tools that you use to make them.

Photography dos and don'ts

Recently, I have found that photography is a skill that is essential to any store, designer, or basic blogging.  There are so many different types of photography from basic black and white with an old 35mm shutter camera to the new digital photography that requires nothing more than a camera and a computer to create something unique.  Though I must say that no matter how good your equipment or how expensive your camera without an artistic eye you may find creating amazing photographic works of art to be difficult.  However, all is not lost, practice, practice and more practice can show you the way to making your own fantastic shots.

New vs Old Cameras

When looking at the new vs old cameras I have found both have both good and bad things from portability to tools and uses.  I have used both new and old, and I myself love both of them.  They both can be difficult to use and can create beautiful works of art.  I started with the 35mm camera that requires film and the use of a dark room.  This requires the artist to have knowledge of chemicals and methods used to create various techniques and effects with the basic film.  I soon went on to digital photography and the new methods developed for computer usage.  They were both amazing and I have kept both my old and new cameras to help allow for a range of possible images.

Differences

When you look at the differences between the two types of cameras you find that some are subtle and others are very noticeable to all.  The first thing that you need in a good camera is the possibility of amazing picture quality for each image.  In this you will find that digital cameras allow for better manipulation of pixels for image quality, but film has always been known to have the greatest film resolution overall.

Next you want to look at the noise and grain for each of the pictures, and the digital cameras have created a great tool to help photographers with this situation, it is called Noise Reduction.  Both cameras have inherent image noise, but when comparing similar sensitivity between film and digital the digital was found to have better image quality.  Although when comparing them, digital cameras are found to have a problem with color distortion because of the noise.

Yet digital cameras do have one known problem that developers are addressing and that is dynamic range.  Though these cameras are known to have a higher sensitivity or film speed than the original 35mm cameras.

Final Look

When you look back in choosing between digital and film you especially want to take into account the idea of cost difference, convenience and flexibility.  Each of these topics are important when discussing photography.  First is cost, there are several differences between the two first is the fact that digital cameras are much more expensive overall, but the picture development is pretty much free overall.  Instead the costs go to the tools and cost of printing the final products in a high quality fashion.  The basic 35mm cameras have chemical processing for the film instead.

When looking at convenience and flexibility between the camera types digital has a distinct advantage.  First, you are able to see the picture immediately without having to process film in a dark room.  Next, you have the possibility of storage in a digital format, and the ability of photographic editing on the computer interface.  Though, the film cameras do have some flexibility that digital doesn't such as the battery and their usage in large format photography.

The balance between the two with both the good and bad shows why I find both to be useful in their own environment, and why I find it useful to be experienced in both types of photography.

Something New from an Old Idea

Old vs New

EMPRESS

Now a days people have begun to realize the usefulness of recycling and how you can make something new with various things near at hand.  However, this idea doesn't just consist of the random old button or some old clothing you can use to make yourself a new look.  The idea of finding inspiration from things found in the past can involve ideas and techniques as well.

One of my favorite things to do is to find inspiration from ancient civilizations that can be found in our past, from the monumental feats of the Egyptians to the simplistically beautiful works of art done by the Asians.

An Old Idea

true stories from ancient history

I would like to give an example of one of my favorite techniques that was found to be used dating back to the time of the Egyptians.  They are known as Egyptian Coils, and can be found in some of the oldest pieces of jewelry of the Egyptian civilization.  These simple coils were used to create some of the most beautiful pieces of their time.

Now I used the idea behind the Egyptian Coils to create my own piece of jewelry and added a bit of my own style to create a piece that takes me back to the ancient times.

I always found the fantasy of ancient times when the world was mysterious to be so interesting, and that is what this bracelet reminds me of overall.  I think of dragon scales and ancient worlds, and therefore I named this piece my Spiral Dragon Scale Bracelet.

It is just another way to make old techniques to make new ideas.

The Summer Season

It's Summertime!!

Winter has finally ended up here in Alaska, snow is slowly giving away to an endless Tundra filled with wondrous flowers and bountiful foods like blueberries, salmon berries and blackberries.

This time of season has always given me boundless inspirations, especially in the number of colors and the combinations that can be created.  Nature has always found ways to create new and beautiful pieces of art and true artists can find ways to bring it to the masses in different ways, a new painting, an inspiring wardrobe, or a new sprinkling of jewelry.

So now that I have more time and inspiration available as the warm weather slowly encompasses the surrounding country.  Therefore, I have decided to start working on a sort of instruction book involving some patterns of jewelry that I created using Kumihimo, Japanese Braiding, as an inspiration.  This is probably the largest gathering of projects and instruction that I have made.  So I guess, wish me luck.

I can't wait to share my projects, they not only have color blended in but flexibility and the possibility to create something unique for each individual.

Wire Art Jewelry Workshop by Sharilyn Miller

Wire Art Jewelry Workshop

Book Cover (Photo credit: amazon.com)

By: Sharilyn Miller

Recently, I purchased a technique book written by Sharilyn Miller.  She shows you step-by-step techniques and gives you different projects to improve your jewelry making.  Furthermore, this instructional book comes with an accompanying DVD as well.

Miller starts out with a brief introduction and then goes into the basic tools that all jewelry makers need.  These range from the pliers and cutters to the wires and beading supplies.  Each of the tools has an accompanying picture and a brief description explaining their uses.

The next forty-five pages are devoted to several basic techniques.  Some of the easiest of these techniques are the bead connectors and the more difficult are the worm beads.  However, they can be some of the most beautiful pieces you create.  Among my favorite of the techniques that she shows you is the cage beads, the Celtic knot, and the coil wrapped bead connectors.

The final section, around eighty-seven pages, shows you several projects that Miller created.  Each is unique and involves the various techniques that she shows you in the previous forty-five pages.  Among my favorite projects are the Gypsy Earrings, the Dancing Man Necklace, and the Snake Vertebrae Earrings.  Each has their own style, and gives the reader so many possible variations for their own creations.

I recommend this book for all wire workers out there.  It gives you several basic techniques and a firm introduction to the creation of wire jewelry.  Miller is both clear an concise in both her book and her DVD as well.  It is well worth the price, and is good for both visual and hand-on learners as well.

Kumihimo Anywhere, Anytime

Recently I have started to get interested in Kumihimo, also known as Japanese Braiding.  Kumihimo means a gathering of threads, referencing the technique that is used or the braid created when three or more strands intersect.  These cords and braids have existed in the cultures around the world, and was used in Japan dating back to the 6th century.  Samurai, Buddhists, and various artisans have used Kumihimo cords and braids in different ways ranging from armor bindings to decorations on scrolls, mirrors and other items.

In order to create your own basic braids and cords using these techniques you will need a circular Kumihimo Loom with 32 slots and various threads with each pattern.

You can buy your loom and bobbins or you can make your own.  The link below is to a tutorial on how to make your own Kumihimo loom.

When you are making your own braids and cords you can use different types of threads and with each different types your designs will change in appearance.  One of my favorite things to do is make a spiral cord with some thin thread and some thicker thread to create a unique look.

I have had so much fun creating these because you can do them whenever and wherever you want.  So this makes a great multitasking craft idea.

Feel free to share your creations.  I would love to see them.

Born in northern Florida, VAI found herself moving across the U.S. to Montana with her large family as a child. There she visited Glacier National Park each weekend immersing herself in the natural beauty of the outdoors.

Studying art and music since childhood, VAI found inspiration not only in the scenic beauty of nature, but also in the fictional worlds within the written word. This added a delicate, ethereal feeling to her creations.

Overtime, she not only experimented in photography, poetry and various art mediums, she continued to learn new techniques in music as well. VAI participated in exhibitions in not only art, but was also invited to participate in various music festivals and concerts as well. Currently, she is focusing on the various painting mediums along with the mediums found in jewelry making. However, her love for music continues as she learns new instruments and techniques.

Now living in Alaska, VAI finds inspiration in her magical childhood and the ancient civilizations throughout time.
